Summary:

Have you ever been videotaped when you did not want to be? This is what happened to a couple in Shanghai’s subway where a female employee of the Shanghai Metro took a security video of this couple kissing and embracing. She then put it on YouTube for the world to see. She was fired and the couple received a formal apology. They are currently negotiating over compensation.

Opinion:

I feel that the Shanghai worker should not have been fired but should have been severely punished. If they can have everyone in the subway see them kiss, why not everyone else too? It is too severe a consequence to fire an employee for this offense.

Comment:

Connection #1: This reminds me of the time I was in New York and I saw two people kissing on the elevated train. I thought that it was gross that they were kissing in public. They shouldn’t do something in public that should be done in private.

Connection #2: This case reminds me of a time when a subway camera caught two guys robbing a passenger on the train. The guys got away, but were later caught, thanks to the video. Video is important for security, but I think it was not used appropriately in this case.

Hitchhike: I totally agree that this punishment was too harsh. I actually think the worker should have been praised for reminding people of how they should act on the subway. I’ll bet this couple will think twice before they kiss in public again.

Disagree: I totally disagree that the worker should not have been fired. There’s no law against kissing in public. People have a right to express themselves any way they like as long as they’re not hurting anyone else.

Question (probing): Why would you think someone should only be punished? Imagine how you would feel if that was YOU on YouTube. I wonder if you realize how much embarrassment that action caused those poor people.

Question (clarifying): I don’t really understand your opinion. Exactly what kind of punishment do you feel the employee deserves? If I were you, I would investigate the options before just saying she shouldn’t be fired.
